Since the first Escape campervan was painted back in 2009, our fleet has grown to over 600 vans, each uniquely hand-painted by talented local artists in Los Angeles, California.
Check out our interview with artist Drew Brophy below to learn more about the process.
Meet the Escape Artists
Drew Brophy
Mural & Surfboard Artist
We first met Drew, Maria, and their son, Dylan when they traveled through New Zealand in an Escape Campervan in 2008. We kept in touch, and when we decided to launch in Los Angeles in 2009, Drew painted our very first campervan at our humble depot in Lawndale. Drew continues to create amazing pieces for Escape today. He has now been a professional surf artist for over 25 years. He says of his profession, “It’s my job to make things look cool.”
An avid big wave surfer and world traveler, Brophy’s career exploded in the late 1990’s when he began painting his edgy artwork onto surfboards. Drew’s mission is “to inspire generations of people to live the life of their dreams.” He strives to be an example and show the world the good life through his artwork.
Haste returned to Los Angeles, California, in 1988 after living a large part of his childhood in Santiago, Chile. Today, he is recognized for working in a plethora of styles and mediums while still holding true to his graffiti/self-taught roots. His love for graffiti and typography has matured into a graphic design approach to his letter style, bringing different elements and genres into each individual composition.
Haste’s artwork has shown in multiple galleries and outdoor structures throughout the United States, in such cities as Seattle, New York, Miami, San Francisco, Chicago, Austin, San Antonio, Philadelphia, Las Vegas and Los Angeles, as well as Europe and South America. In 2011, Haste was exhibited at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. He has recently participated in an exhibition at the Montana Gallery in Barcelona along with an art book for the Getty Research Institute.
Another New Zealand Escape artist who has an amazing talent and range of styles. Guy Ellis, A.K.A Dcypher, is a native New Zealander living in Los Angeles. He earned his Bachelor of Art and Design in Christchurch, New Zealand, majoring in illustration and graphic design.
Primarily working as a freelance mural artist, his artwork ranges from large-scale custom artworks, advertisement murals, signage, and on-set painting to digital illustration, logo design and aerosol on canvas. Along with painting large scale advertisement murals for companies such as Converse and Microsoft, he has also developed artwork for the TV shows Sons of Anarchy, Silicon Valley, and NCIS, and was recently invited to Dubai to participate in painting the World’s Largest Graffiti Wall for the Guinness Book of World Records.
A designer and visual artist living in Venice, California who practices at his studio CHALK. His background is in graffiti art, graphic design, art history, and advertising. While working at some of the worlds top agencies, he has had the pleasure of learning how to make brands famous from the very best in the business.
A huge believer in do-it-yourself, he loves the unfamiliar, figuring out how things work, taking them apart, studying and reassembling them. Most of his work brings in this inquisitive spirit in its exploration of techniques, materials, and concepts. When he’s not finding creative solutions to problems, he spends his time painting, biking, or somehow getting dirty outside.
Dan has been painting Escape Camper Vans since 2004 in New Zealand and is our resident artist there. When we decided to launch in Los Angeles in 2009, we lured Dan over to LA to help paint the first 20 Campervans with the implications of the bright lights, Hollywood lifestyle and getting out of Auckland for a while. He was unimpressed to be sleeping on a single airbed (with a slow leak) in our small house/office which was under the 405 Freeway in Lawndale (next door to Compton) and still hasn’t forgiven us. (We owe you one!) DT is a truly talented artist with a style that covers all genres.
We love Kofie’s art and hope to get him back every build to create some more masterpieces. Augustine Kofie has been active in the West Los Angeles graffiti scene since the mid-90s. From a deep interest in architecture, typography, 1960s iconography, contemporary music, and street culture, Kofie constructs barely perceptible dialogues that hold meaning for himself. Intense skill and technique reflect a certain reliance upon structure in the creative process. Kofie aims to create images that leap off the canvas at the viewer but at the same time invite him or her to join a conversation. His work has been exhibited across the US.
For any self-respecting L.A. native graffiti lover, King Cre8 needs no introduction. Cre8 is one of Los Angeles’ most consistent writers – always painting, never resting, unlike the countless old-school writers that always point to history as their claim to fame. Cre8 prides himself by remaining true to his career as a graffiti artist, muralist, illustrator, graphic designer, and art instructor. Cre8 is heavily influenced by all elements of hip-hop and has been extremely passionate about his artwork since a young kid.

Born of artistic parents, his dreams were always supported from the start. Mark is a talented tattoo artist, inking locals and celebs from his Cocoa Beach Endless Summer Tattoo studio. Mark has made himself a fixture of the Cocoa Beach community, donating his time and art to many local charity events and fundraisers.
California street-art legend Vyal One, also known as Vyal Reyes, developed his trademark style in the late 1980s. Reyes is a leader in the graffiti arts movement, an inspiration to other artists, and works with the local LA community to get kids involved with the arts. He has participated multiple years in Denver’s Colorado CRUSH event, one year taking on one of the largest walls in the event, which wrapped around the building at 2668 Walnut Street. In his own words, he paints “hallucinations.”
Griffin was born in Nairobi, Kenya, and moved to the US as a child. His lucid visual style and continuing exploration of new forms of expression are influenced by a wanderlust that was instilled in him from a young age. An Oakland-based artist of many mediums & themes, Griffin is an aerosol muralist, fine artist, illustrator, & designer. His work fuses elements from our modern technological age with motifs from the old world.
Griffin’s graffiti and street-art roots stretch back to the mid-90s. To this day, he is drawn to creating large-scale aerosol murals that have been seen around the US and at high-profile cultural events internationally.
Originally from the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, Caleb currently lives in Atlanta, GA. Caleb used to wash dishes, move furniture, and build Mardi Gras floats. Now he gets to draw pictures and air drum all day.
