Many camper van<\/a> renters have struggled to find\u00a0campsites at popular parks, like Yosemite National Park and Grand Canyon National Park. So, when we started hearing\u00a0about their successes with Campnab in our Facebook group called Escape Camper Vans Community<\/a>, we decided to do some\u00a0investigation of our own.<\/p>\n

What Is Campnab?<\/h2>\n

Campnab<\/a> is a tool built by two\u00a0campers (Eric Shelkie and Eric Karjaluoto) from Canada. Eric\u00a0Shelkie couldn\u2019t book a campsite because everything was\u00a0sold out. Then, his wife spotted an opening just by hitting\u00a0Refresh on the BC Parks booking page. This led him to ask\u00a0how that opening became available.<\/p>\n

He learned that campsite bookings are often canceled.\u00a0Unfortunately, it\u2019s impractical to reload a website all day\u00a0long, hoping to spot an opening. So, he built a tool that\u2019d\u00a0notify him when something suitable opened up. It worked so\u00a0well that he made it available to all campers.<\/p>\n

Use Campnab to Get<\/strong> Campsite Availability Notifications<\/strong><\/h2>\n

With Campnab, you create a scan to match your preferred\u00a0camping experience. You start by noting the park you wish\u00a0to camp at, and your desired campground. From there you\u00a0set an arrival date (you can make it flexible) and the number\u00a0of nights you wish to stay for. You then provide your mobile\u00a0number so they can text you new availabilities.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re also prompted to choose a pay-per-use scan or\u00a0monthly\/annual membership. Eric tells us that memberships\u00a0offer the best value, as they afford more scans and flexibility\u00a0at a lower price. Pay-per-use scans cost $10 \u2013 $20, whereas,\u00a0monthly memberships range from $10 \u2013 $50 a month\u00a0depending on the plan you choose.<\/p>\n

Does Campnab Work?<\/h2>\n

Our renters used Campnab to find spots at popular parks.\u00a0We were curious, though. Is this what most people can\u00a0expect from Campnab? Eric Karjaluoto explained, \u201cIt really\u00a0depends on the situation and your scan parameters. We\u00a0don\u2019t control the supply. We only scan for openings.\u201d He\u00a0continued: \u201cRunning multiple (slightly varied) scans, being\u00a0flexible about your arrival dates, and planning ahead can\u00a0make a big difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

From Campnab\u2019s Review page it appears that many are\u00a0pleased with the service. Campnab user Glen S., notes:\u00a0\u201cWithout Campnab we would have had to completely change\u00a0our plans or pay hundreds of dollars to keep our original\u00a0plan. Campnab is a freaking GENIUS idea and I will\u00a0absolutely use you again in the future and recommend you\u00a0to anyone who could use your services.\u201d<\/p>\n

Does Campnab Use Bots To Secure A Spot?<\/h2>\n

Some are apprehensive about using an automated service to find a\u00a0campsite. We asked Eric Shelkie about his feelings on this\u00a0point. He explained, \u201cWe\u2019ve heard about people using bots\u00a0to hoard campsite reservations\u2014and then resell those spots.\u00a0We don\u2019t want any part in that. In fact, we don\u2019t even book\u00a0spots for our members. We only notify them when openings\u00a0come available. The rest is up to them.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, Campnab provides a legitimate service\u2014and\u00a0their users appreciate how it works for them. Eric\u00a0also noted that without a service like Campnab, many of\u00a0these spots would go unused. He mentioned that in their\u00a0first year of service, they saw up to 4,000 new spots a day\u00a0open up in B.C. and Ontario alone. So, otherwise, sold-out\u00a0campsites do open up all the time.<\/p>\n
