At just over 4,000 feet, Hunter Mountain in Hunter, NY is the second highest peak in the Catskills and is also home to a fire tower at the summit and a ski mountain.\u00a0 There are several trails to the summit of varying difficulties, so do your research before you head to the trailhead.\u00a0 The easiest route is the Spruceton trail, which gradually ascends a fire-road like trail.\u00a0 For those who want a steeper, rockier challenge the Becker Hollow trail is only a 2-mile hike to the summit but gains over 2,000 feet of elevation in 1.5 rocky, rooty miles.\u00a0 The Devil&#8217;s path to the Hunter Mountain trail is also a great option.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dec.ny.gov\/lands\/73982.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overlook Mountain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Overlook mountain is a 5 mile out and back located in Woodstock, NY.\u00a0 The trailhead is across the street from a monastery, and there are hundreds of prayer flags flying outside which is quite a sight!\u00a0 The trail itself is wide and not particularly rocky or technical.\u00a0 \u00a0It climbs steadily but never too steeply.\u00a0 About 1.5 miles into your hike, be sure to take some time to explore the ruins of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/articles\/overlook-mountain-house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overlook Mountain House<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 As you continue from here, stay on the trail and watch your footing carefully; this area is home to a population of timber rattlesnakes that can often be seen basking in the sun in warmer months.\u00a0 If you are hiking with a dog be sure to keep them well controlled on a short leash.\u00a0 \u00a0Not a snake fan?\u00a0 Try this hike in cooler weather &#8211; making them a great option for a family-friendly stroll or a quick leg stretch.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t worry &#8211; if you are looking for a longer hike with an aquatic reward along the way, they have those too!\u00a0 \u00a0Check out these <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitthecatskills.com\/waterfalls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catskills waterfall hike<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ideas to satisfy every traveler.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dec.ny.gov\/lands\/50755.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaaterskill Falls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Kaaterskill Falls is perhaps the most famous waterfall in the area.\u00a0 The 260-foot-tall two-tier waterfall (higher than Niagara Falls!) is in Hunter, NY.\u00a0 There are several trail access areas; After exploring Woodstock, don\u2019t miss a meal at the nearby and famous (for good reason!) Phoenicia Diner.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tannersville is a small downtown area near Hunter Mountain, home to some fantastic restaurants and shops (tip &#8211; check out Mama&#8217;s Boy Burgers for delicious burgers, milkshakes, and soft serve.\u00a0 For a fancier splurge meal out, Jessie&#8217;s Harvest House is
