In New England, the fun doesn\u2019t stop when the temperatures drop\u2013it\u2019s just getting started. But what do you do if you\u2019re not a skier or snowboarder? Cold temps and snow mean more caution and more prep, but camping and hiking in the winter is FUN and worth it! One of my favorite places to play in the winter is the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/activity\/whitemountain\/recreation\/camping-cabins\/?recid=74405&amp;actid=29\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">White Mountains website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has up-to-date <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">information on fees and locations, so check that first. Barnes Field and Hancock campgrounds are all year-round. There are also some private campgrounds that remain open year-round, including (just to name a few) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammonoosuccampground.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ammonoosuc Campground<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> near Bretton Woods, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.applehillcamping.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apple Hill Campground<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Bethlehem, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.campnh.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Branch Brook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Campton (near Franconia Notch), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reserveamerica.com\/camping\/cannon-mountain-rv-park\/r\/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NH&amp;parkId=270121\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannon Mountain RV Park<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Franconia Notch, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crazyhorsenh.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crazy Horse Campground<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Littleton (also near Franconia Notch).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wherever you choose, it will be COLD.\u00a0 Be safe and be prepared, and you will have a fantastic time! Check your weather forecasts closely and count on well-below-freezing temps. Bring lots of layers, sleeping bags rated for the cold, and pack up that extra duvet and heater. Apps such as The Weather Channel, WeatherBug, etc. only give you the in-town forecast. To check the forecast of the higher elevations (above 4,000 and 5,000 feet) you\u2019ll need to check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountwashington.org\/experience-the-weather\/higher-summit-forecast.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mount Washington Observatory\u2019s higher summit forecast<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/gyx\/AllLocationsText?loc=MOUNT%20WASHINGTON\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Weather Service recreation forecast for the NH higher summits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Layers and safety gear are key. I could list it all out here for you (making packing lists is one of my favorite things!) but it\u2019s been done before and done well. I suggest taking a look at this <a href=\"https:\/\/sectionhiker.com\/winter-day-hiking-gear-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">winter day hiking gear list<\/a>\u00a0by the Section Hiker. Pick up a copy of the Appalachian Mountain Club\u2019s (AMC) White Mountains Guide as well as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ems.com\/white-mountains-waterproof-trail-map\/20447700012.html?mrkgcl=661&amp;mrkgadid=3216391584&amp;rkg_id=h-952f5d1a9cedd197196fee73a301a0fb_t-1514557081&amp;emssrcid=PPC%3AgooPLAs%3A383975595807_product_type_camp_hike_product_type_navigation&amp;product_id=20447700012&amp;adpos=1o1&amp;creative=203265214492&amp;device=c&amp;matchtype=&amp;network=g&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMIrvGrsbSv2AIVULnACh0-TwEbEAQYASABEgLK4_D_BwE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">waterproof White Mountains Trail map<\/a> to plot your course. This may sound silly, but be sure you know how to use a map and compass. Don\u2019t rely on your phone, as batteries do NOT like cold weather. Keep your phone warm (inside an inner pocket with a hand warmer for good measure) and carry a portable charger for emergency use. Want to try out xc skiing instead at one of the many great XC ski areas in the whites? Don\u2019t fret. There are plenty of places to rent gear (and most of the xc ski areas offer rentals right there). A few suggestions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outdoors.org\/\">Appalachian Mountain Club<\/a> centers at Crawford Notch and Pinkham Notch have stores within them as well as demo gear to try out.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ime-usa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Mountain Equipment<\/a>\u00a0in North Conway offers gear rentals as well as new gear and a large consignment shop. We don\u2019t have elevation to contend with in New England, but the weather conditions in the Whites are notorious for sudden storms, high winds, and bitter cold.<\/p>\n<p>I would not attempt these unless the forecast is favorable AND you are an experienced hiker with a fair amount of winter hiking experience as well. For current trail conditions, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newenglandtrailconditions.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New England Trail Conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trailsnh.com\/dashboard.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trails NH<\/span><\/a>\u00a0before you hike to see the most recently posted trail reports.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/4000footers.com\/huts.shtml#lonesome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lonesome Lake<\/a> \u2013 Beginner-friendly hike to the hut, where you can warm up<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/4000footers.com\/willard.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mount Willard<\/a> \u2013 One of the \u201c52 with a view\u201d moderate hikes with rewarding views at the top!<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/4000footers.com\/falls_arethusa.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arethusa Falls<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 1.5-mile hike out to a (frozen) waterfall<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/trail\/us\/new-hampshire\/south-moat-mountain-trail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Moat Mountain<\/a> \u2013 5 miles out and back with fantastic views in Conway<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/adventuresneaker.com\/2017\/02\/25\/tuckerman-ravine-trail-new-hampshire-hiking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tuckerman Ravine Trail<\/a> (Pinkham Notch AMC center to the Hermit Lake Shelter) \u2013 A well-traveled climb to the caretaker\u2019s cabin and hermit lake shelter. 5 miles round trip, or 6 if you continue on to the bowl of Tuckerman\u2019s to watch the backcountry skiers.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/trail\/us\/new-hampshire\/mount-kearsarge-north--2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kearsarge North<\/a> \u2013 6 miles round trip in the North Conway area, with a fire tower at the top and stunning panoramic views<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/trail\/us\/new-hampshire\/mount-crawford-via-davis-path-trail\">Mount Crawford<\/a> \u2013 Another 52&Prime; with a view option\u00a0\u00bb, a 4-mile hike in Crawford Notch with amazing views of the Presidential range<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/4000footers.com\/pierce.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mount Pierce<\/a> \u2013 Another great beginner winter 4000-footer in Crawford Notch. The best route is to follow the Crawford Path to the top. Starts across from the AMC Highland Center.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/trail\/us\/new-hampshire\/mount-tom-avalon-and-field-loop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mount Tom\/Mount Field<\/a> \u2013 Bag 2 4000 footers on this 6-7 mile hike (and add Avalon for some views and a 52 with a view.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/4000footers.com\/tecumseh.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mount Tecumseh<\/a> \u2013 Moderate 4000-footer great for beginners wanting to check one off the list.
