September 11, 2024 A Road Trip Song To Sing As You Drive Your Campervan

By Dawn S

A few years ago, John and I drove our campervan, Big Blue, from Florida to Niagara Falls, then through Ontario, and into New England to see the fall leaves, before returning home by a different route.

While sitting around a campfire one evening in New Hampshire, we decided to come up with our very own road trip song named  “Van Song.” After composing a few funny lines, we thought it would be easiest to do a parody of a song we already knew.  So here is our Van Song, “Mamma’s Don’t Let Your Babies Travel Around In A Van”, in the style of Willie and Waylon, written by Dawn and John Steinhauer.

When you are on your next  Escape Camper Vans road trip, you can sing our van song, and even change up the lyrics to fit your adventure. Please share any verses you come up with in the comments!

Mamma’s Don’t Let Your Babies Travel Around In A Van

Wanderers ain’t easy to love, and they’re harder to hold.

They’d rather send you a postcard, than call you and talk on the phone.

Wearing quick-dry pants, fleece layers, and headlamps, each night at a new KOA.

They’ll follow old torn maps, If they can’t get no signal, but they always seem to find their way.

(Chorus)

Mamma’s don’t let your babies travel around in a van,

Don’t let ‘em plan road trips that last for two weeks, make ‘em take cruises or trips to the beach.

Mamma’s don’t let your babies travel around in a van,

They’re never at home, ‘cause they want to roam,

they’ll get away every chance that they can.

(Verse)

Dawn and John like smokey ol’ campfires, and quick border crossings,

And looking for license plates, and moose, and deer in the night.

Those that they meet while they’re travelin’ they chat with,

But some of them don’t know how to take them,

Because they sleep in a van, and shower when they can,

And make coffee and tea wherever they like.

(Verse)

Our van is warm and roomy, with pockets to put stuff, and gear that gets hung all around.

She has a visor, and curtains, that go up, And a bed, and shades, that go down.

We love our old van, and named her “Big Blue” because she runs like a champ.

With a seatbelt quirk, and a gas gauge that don’t work, we just back in, and we’re ready to camp!
