From world-class ski resorts to national park visits during the shoulder season, there is a lot to explore in Utah in the winter if you’re willing to bear the cold. Winter camping in Utah is becoming more accessible as campgrounds and RV parks are staying open year-round! So whether you’re an avid skier trying to get first chair on a powder day or a national park lover who wants to enjoy the serene winter landscapes without the summer crowds a camper van road trip is a great option for you! And you can easily pick up an Escape Camper Van right in Salt Lake City to start winter camping in Utah!  

Salt Lake City Area

There are plenty of year-round campgrounds near Salt Lake City. Camp at the Great Salt Lake to experience the unique landscape of this desert saline lake. Or camp north or east of the city for close access to outstanding ski resorts. There are many ski resorts within a 20 to 45-minute drive from these campgrounds. It’s important to remember when winter camping in Utah, even the Salt Lake Valley gets snow. Some of these campgrounds are open year-round but some services like water and electricity are not available in the winter due to pipes freezing. Details are listed under each.  

Sun Outdoors Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City

Provo River Resort is a beautiful RV park and camping area right on the Provo River. It’s only a 15-minute drive from Sundance Resort, about a 45-minute drive from Park City and Deer Valley Ski Resorts, and a bit over an hour from the Cottonwood Canyon ski resorts. During the winter from November through April riverfront sites are available but have no water or hookups available. Sites have picnic tables and fire pits. There are no tent-only sites.  

Como Springs Resort

Morgan – Northeast of Salt Lake

Como Springs Resort is about 50 minutes northeast of downtown Salt Lake City. It’s off Highway 84 alongside the Weber River. Skiers and snowboarders will be happy to know it’s only a 25-minute drive from Snowbasin Resort. Primitive tent sites, where vans can get away with dry camping (RVs cannot), and RV sites are available throughout the winter. Como Springs Resort has showers, bathrooms, fire rings, and picnic tables. Wifi is currently not available.

Willard Peak Campground

Willard – North of Salt Lake

Willard Peak Campground is located an hour north of Salt Lake City, less than an hour from Antelope Island State Park, and about 45 minutes from the ski resorts Snowbasin and Powder Mountain. Sites have water and electric access year-round. The campground has laundry, showers, bathrooms, a general store, internet access, and a sports field when free of snow. 

Great Salt Lake State Park Campground

Salt Lake City

Great Salt Lake State Park is only a 20-minute drive from downtown Salt Lake. Camping along the shores of the Great Salt Lake is a beautiful spot to spend your time in nature but conveniently close to the city.   Both primitive and partial hookup sites are available year-round but sites do not have running water or electricity throughout the winter starting November 1. Sites have picnic tables, fire grates, and toilets year-round.  

Antelope Island State Park Campground

Salt Lake City

Antelope Island is the largest island in the Great Salt Lake and a beautiful place to go winter camping in Utah! The campground is open year-round and has both primitive sites and partial hookup sites. It’s a combination of 92 campsites all with vault restrooms. The campground has picnic tables, vault toilets, and water and electric hookups.  

Riverside RV Resort

South Weber – North Salt Lake City

Riverside RV Resort is the perfect spot to camp if you’re checking out the ski resorts north of Salt Lake. The campground is 30 minutes north of Downtown Salt Lake City only 20 minutes from Snowbasin Resort and 45 minutes from Powder Mountain. The campsites have picnic tables and fire pits. The RV resort has a fitness area, dog park, laundry facility, bathrooms with showers, close access to walking trails, and community hangout areas.  

Mountain Valley RV Resort

Heber City – East of Salt Lake City

Mountain Valley RV Resort is a brand new resort located in Heber City just a 25-minute drive from Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley Resort. Sites have picnic tables and fire pits. The resort has bathrooms with showers and both family and adult amenity areas.

Campgrounds Near Moab

Known for its hiking, rafting, climbing, paragliding, and more, Moab is often considered the adventure capital of Utah. It’s located in the southeastern part of the state and in addition to the incredible access to outdoor activities the city is minutes away from Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. Since Moab has mild winters, compared to the rest of Utah, it’s a popular place to recreate throughout the winter and most campgrounds provide services and amenities throughout the whole year. Daytime temperatures average in the 40s on the coldest winter days but since it is the desert it gets cold at night, with temperatures dropping below freezing@ These are some best spots for winter camping in Utah if you’re hoping to check out Arches, Canyonlands, or even Capitol Reef National Park.

Sun Outdoors Canyonlands Gateway

Moab

Sun Outdoors Canyonlands Gateway is a great spot for winter camping in Utah. It’s a 20-minute drive from the Canyonlands Island in the Sky entrance and a 10-minute drive from the Arches National Park entrance. The campground has hot showers, bathrooms, laundry, and wifi. Sites have picnic tables and grills. Power and amenities are usable year-round.  

Sun Outdoors Arches Gateway

Moab

Sun Outdoors Arches Gateway is located just a short drive from Canyonlands Gateway and is another fantastic spot! It’s less than a five-minute drive from the Arches National Park entrance and 30 minutes from Canyonlands. The city of Moab is only a five-minute drive away which is convenient for grocery runs. Sites have picnic tables, grills, and some spots even have covered tents for shade. The campground has year-round water, bathrooms, showers, a pavilion, laundry, internet access, and a general store.

Sun Outdoors North Moab

Moab

Sun Outdoors North Moab is adjacent to Sun Outdoor Arches Gateway meaning it has close access to both parks and the town of Moab. The campground is just a short walk from the Colorado River. Sites have fire pits, picnic tables, and tent covers providing shade. The campground has bathrooms, showers, internet access, a playground, a pavilion, and a general store.

Sun Outdoors Moab Downtown

Moab

Located in the right heart of Moab is another Sun Outdoors Campground. This is a great spot to stay if you want to be within walking distance of the shops, restaurants, and bars in Moab. And still, you’re only a 10-minute drive from the entrance to Arches and a 40-minute drive from Canyonalnds. Campsites have grills and picnic tables. The campground has bathrooms, showers, laundry, a general store, and a dog park.

Grandstaff Campground

Moab

Grandstaff Campground is a beautiful camp spot along rock cliffs and the Colorado River, just outside of Moab. It’s located very close to the entrance of Arches National Park and not far from Canyonlands National Park. It’s a first-come, first-serve Bureau of Land Management (BLM) campground with 16 sites. Sites fill up quickly from March to October but it’s easier to snag a spot in the winter months. Grandstaff Campground is a basic campground with toilets and picnic tables but there is no running water or hookups.  

Devils Garden Campground

Arches National Park

Camp right in Arches National Park at Devils Garden Campground. The campground is located at the end of Arches National Park Road, 18 miles into the park. Sites are first come, first served from November to February. Reservations are required from March through October. Sites have drinking water, grills, tables, and toilets. There are no showers or electric hookups.
